Cambodia homestay - Local girl

Home in the Cambodian countryside

Route: Phnom Penh - Kompong Cham - Phnom Penh

A cultural Cambodia trip in the countryside is a unique opportunity to experience a side of Cambodia you might otherwise not see on your Cambodia travels. Spending a couple of days as part of a local community allows you to get to know the people, the culture and the authentic way of life in rural Cambodia. During this cultural Cambodia experience, you’ll stay in a basic homestay with your hosts, who really go out of their way to make you feel at home. During your stay you can help out with the everyday jobs and join in daily village life.

Your local guide will take you on a walk through the Cambodian countryside. At the temples at Sambor Prei Kuk you can soak up the history of the once powerful Cambodian empire. After a few days you’ll feel right at home in this small community. Once you’ve said goodbye to your new found friends you’ll be dropped off at Kampong Thom where you can continue your Cambodia trip to Siem Reap.

Day 1: Phnom Penh - Kampong Thom - Sambor Prei Kuk

After breakfast you’ll be picked up at your hotel in Phnom Penh by a local driver and transferred to the bus station where you’ll board the bus to your Cambodia homestay. Kampong Thom is a peaceful village tucked away in the countryside a couple of hours east of Phnom Penh. It’s a very traditional image of rural, cultural Cambodia. At Kampong Thom you’ll be met at the bus station for the one-hour drive by tuktuk to your homestay.

On arrival you'll be welcomed by your hosts. For the next few days of your cultural Cambodia experience, you can enjoy being part of village community. There’s nothing planned for this afternoon, so spend the rest of the day exploring the area. Challenge the village kids to a game of football and get to know the villagers. The Cambodians are known for their hospitality and will do their best to make you feel at home. You’ll stay in a basic, traditional Cambodian home.

Day 2: Sambor Prei Kuk

After breakfast on day two of your cultural Cambodia homestay, you’ll head out on a bike tour with a local guide to the ancient temple complex Sambor Prei Kuk. Soak up the mystical atmosphere as you wander through the historic temples like Prasat Sambor and Prasat Tor. The temples are overgrown and derelict in places, but still give you an impressive idea of their former grandeur. Some of the temples are older than the temples at Angkor Wat, dating back to the 1st Century AD.

In the afternoon you can help out with the daily work in the village for a real taste of cultural Cambodia. There’s plenty to do, so depending on the season, you can help planting or harvesting the rice, weaving silk cloths or try your hand at woodcarving. Later on you can go on another bike ride through the countryside. In the evening, round off the day back at the homestay with a traditional Cambodian meal prepared by your host.

Day 3: Sambor Prei Kuk - Kampong Thom - Siem Reap

Even though you’ve spent the last few nights in basic accommodation without electricity, hot water or air-conditioning, it’s difficult to say goodbye to your new friends. After spending two days as part of the village community on this cultural Cambodia tour, it’s like you’ve become one of the locals. This unique experience will give you a deeper understanding of the authentic Cambodian way of life which you won’t get to see in the cities or beach resorts.

After breakfast you’ll be transferred by tuktuk to Kampong Thom bus station, where you’ll catch the bus back to Siem Reap. On arrival in Siem Reap make your own way to your hotel, marking the end of this module. You can also do this module in reverse order, beginning in Siem Reap and ending in Phnom Penh.
