Cambodia trip - Kep and Sihanoukville

Chilling in Cambodia

Route: Phnom Penh - Kep - Sihanoukville

After travelling through Cambodia, how about a nice relaxing beach getaway to end your Cambodia trip. Although Cambodia isn't known for its beautiful beaches, you'll find delightful sandy beaches and bays in Sihanoukville. Then, in Kep, you'll find a deserted beach, fresh crab restaurants and spectacular sunsets.... bliss.

You'll sleep in quaint beach bungalows on a green hill with great views of the sunset or in a bungalow near the beach where you can dream away in a hammock. These beach bungalows are an ideal to end an active Cambodia trip.

Day 1: Phnom Penh - Kep

After breakfast this morning our driver will be waiting to take you to Kep, which should take about 4 hours. Along the way you'll visit Phnom Chisor, an ancient Khmer temple on a hill top. It's quite a climb to reach the top, but it will all be worth it when you see the view. Below there are two impressive entrance temples at the foot of the mountain. You'll find yourself in quite a rural area with farmers and grazing cows all around. Next you'll continue your Cambodia trip towards Angkor Borei, a town that was once the site of an archaeological excavation of which the findings are displayed in a small museum.

Sometime in the afternoon you'll arrive in the seaside town of Kep, with its fish restaurants and a fine beach. On weekends, this fisherman's town is a favourite among the inhabitants of Phnom Penh. This gives you the opportunity to meet more locals, less tourists. You'll spend the night in a beach bungalow built against a hill. From here, you'll have a wide open view of the sea straight ahead, to the right Bokor Mountain and to the left the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. Kep is a great base for visits to the deserted islands off the coast and for bike and hiking trips through the forested hills.

Day 2: Kep - No activities planned

You can spend the second day of your Cambodia trip in Kep as you wish. Lounge in a hammock with a good book, take an occasional dip in the sea or look for more adventurous ways to spend your day - whatever you choose, there's plenty to do here. Just beyond your beach bungalow, there's a trail over Kep's mountain. There are mountain bikes, scooters and jeeps for rent or you can simply go for a walk through the woods, enjoying the sea view.

If you want to see the most beautiful Cambodia beaches during your Cambodia, don't miss the islands of Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) and Koh Poh (Coral Island). Koh Tonsay has three stunning white beaches and Koh Poh is somehow even more beautiful. The coral surrounding this island makes for fascinating underwater explorations. The hotel can arrange your transfer to the pier, a half-hour boat trip and a picnic basket.

Day 3 and 4: Kep - Sihanoukville

After breakfast on day three of this Cambodia trip, you'll be picked up by your driver and you'll say goodbye to Kep. You'll drive for about 2.5 hours along the southern coast until you reach Sihanoukville. This tropical beach town with four long stretches of beach and crystal blue seas is still relatively underdeveloped. This area is more developed than Kep and Kampot, yet it still remains peaceful. You'll spend two nights at Ochheuteal beach in cosy beach bungalows only a one minute walk (seriously) from the beach. Around sunset the Cambodian peddlers sell fresh jumbo shrimp, lobster and ink fish which they can grill for you on the BBQ. During your stay in Sihanoukville you can also visit islands or take snorkelling tours. Not far from your resort you'll find the Ream National Park, known for its untainted nature, tropical beaches, mangrove forests and dense jungle.

Day 5:  Sihanoukville - End of Cambodia trip

After this completely different Cambodia beach experience, hopefully you'll end up refreshed, relaxed and ready to continue on your journey. There are several options for continuing your travels after this Cambodia trip. We can arrange a comfortable bus to Phnom Penh; an excellent location for visits to other areas or countries. You could take a private transfer to the Thai border, to the town of Trat and then continue on with a bus to Bangkok. If you started your Cambodia trip at the Cambodian beaches, you may want to continue with the module Passage through Cambodia. All the Cambodian highlights are included in this Cambodia trip, such as the Killing Fields and one of the world wonders, Angkor Wat.
